The Department hosts top-rated initial teacher education programmes, incorporating Secondary PGCE, innovative Masters programmes and a wide range of continuing professional development courses.

The Development Education Research Centre, the Centre for Holocaust Education, Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education and the Centre for Teachers and Teaching Research are situated within the Department and contribute to its success.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for an appropriately experienced individual to become part of the subject team for the PGCE Science courses, with the need to have expertise in physics education.

The successful candidate will engage in relevant teaching and supervision of PGCE science students and will be responsible for coordinating and leading the PGCE Physics part of the course (including the Physics with Mathematics PGCE course). You may also be involved in teaching of physics education at undergraduate level, and there is also scope within the role to contribute to the MA Education (Science). The postholder will also be expected to engage in scholarship and/or research in some aspect of science education.

This post is on a part-time basis (.80 FTE/ 29.20 hours per week) and the salary being offered is pro-rata to the FTE.

About you

The successful candidate will have a good first degree, or equivalent experience, in an area relevant to physics education. You must also hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent, and hold a master’s (or higher) degree in education or related field (either completed or nearing completion).

You will have experience of working effectively with student teachers and/or school colleagues to support their professional development, and will demonstrate a sound understanding of Initial Teacher Education (ITE). A proven record of successful physics teaching in schools is essential, alongside a strong working knowledge of the UK school science curriculum.

The role also requires you to work with student teachers in a pastoral capacity, providing support and guidance as they progress through their training. You will have a good knowledge of academic literature in physics/science education. Finally, you will demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing the field of physics or science education through the generation of new knowledge and the production of a range of research and scholarly outputs.
