The role

The School of Chemistry are looking to appoint a dynamic, hardworking and enthusiastic individual to assist the Leading Chemistry Stores Technician in all aspects of the Chemical stores and loading bay functions in the School of Chemistry. You will be responsible for receiving, unpacking and checking wide variety of goods including, but not limited to, solvents, chemicals, laboratory equipment and gas cylinders. Attention to detail, problem solving skills and the ability to follow strict regulatory procedures are essential for success in this role.  You will be responsible for maintaining stock items, processing orders, dealing with enquiries while running a counter service, all while providing excellent customer support.  Duties include supplying solvents, processing waste solvent with use of Specialist PPE where required.  Manual handling drums and compressed gas cylinders will be routine. Driving a fork lift truck will be required, necessary training will be provided.

What will you be doing?

Supporting the School of Chemistry by providing essential day-to-day operational support, typical duties would include

  • Responsible for receiving, unpacking and checking of a wide variety of goods such as solvents, chemicals, electrical goods, laboratory equipment and gas cylinders. Identifying discrepancies or damaged goods, checking delivery notes against requisitions and purchase orders. Informing staff of the arrival of goods by phone or E-Mail.
  • Responsible for running the stores counter service including issue of stock items, answering queries, recording and maintaining levels of all stock items.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all stores users.
  • Responsible for the packaging for dispatch of outgoing goods, relating to orders, returns etc. Arranging carriage by carrier or courier including pick up time
  • Responsible for the creation & update of Stores Databases, update of the Stores Web Page
  • Ordering of stock via the purchasing system. All using relevant IT skills.
  • To assist on the Loading Bay with safe handling and storage of compressed gas cylinders and solvents, including arrangements for the decanting, separating and disposal of waste solvents. Some manual handling tasks are necessary and use of the stores fork lift trucks.
  • To take full responsibility for the day to day running of the Chemistry Stores on a regular basis due to the Chemical Stores Leading Technician being absent or required elsewhere, with particular attention to health and safety in an extremely high risk environment

You thrive on working in a busy, varied environment and have excellent interpersonal, communication skills and enjoy using your skills to deliver a high quality service to all stakeholders.

Work pattern: Full time/ Mon- Fri 8.30-4.30
