We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher in Human Physiology and Metabolism to join our dynamic research team at the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) at the University of Cambridge (https://www.mrl.ims.cam.ac.uk). This position offers an outstanding opportunity to work within Dr. Maria Chondronikola's group, embedded in a highly collaborative and internationally renowned research environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing cutting-edge research focused on understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying metabolic complications associated with obesity. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly's group and other investigators within the IMS.

This role is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in human physiology and metabolism, and a passion for impactful, translational science.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research Design and Implementation: Plan and execute experimental medicine studies focusing on energy homeostasis and glucose/lipid homeostasis
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Perform in vivo metabolic testing, blood sample and tissue analyses, and molecular biology techniques. Analyse experimental data using statistical tools and computational methods.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of researchers and students. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in laboratory techniques, data analysis, and research methodologies.
  • Research Dissemination: Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. Contribute to grant writing and securing funding for ongoing research projects.
  • Development of Novel Approaches: Contribute to the development of innovative methodologies and experimental approaches to better understand the mechanisms affecting metabolic health in people. 

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Ph.D. in Nutritional/Exercise Physiology or a related field.
  • Research Experience: A strong research background in metabolism and human physiology. Experience with clinical research and/or experimental medicine studies necessary.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis and statistical software. Experience with high-throughput techniques, omics technologies, or metabolomics is a plus.
  • Publications: A record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals is desirable.
  • Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly present research findings to a broad audience, including at conferences and in publications.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative research team. Strong organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in advanced metabolic techniques (e.g., indirect calorimetry, stable isotope tracers, medical imaging).
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, stable isotope tracers methodologies, GCMS desirable.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics and computational biology approaches for analysing large datasets (e.g., transcriptomics, proteomics).
