Portsmouth Military Education Team (PMET) is seeking to appoint a permanent Teaching Fellow in either Defence Studies, International Security or Air and Space power and to work within the bespoke team that provides academic support to the Royal Air Force (RAF).
PMET is looking to appoint someone that would complement the team’s existing expertise, located at RAF Halton, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The role involves teaching RAF personnel principally, but this appointment is integrated fully with the University of Portsmouth. It may also require occasional teaching at RAF College Cranwell.
The successful candidate is likely to have completed a doctorate or be close to completion, but professional qualifications and senior professional experience will also be considered. You will be committed to excellence in teaching at all levels, with support to develop teaching skills being available for less experienced staff. You will have drive and enthusiasm, an innovative approach to research, learning and teaching, and enjoy working collaboratively in a dynamic environment. Experience of delivering blended/distance learning and practical student-led learning would be advantageous.
You must be willing to undergo MoD security clearance (you should have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years to obtain CTC level security clearance), and act to retain that clearance during your employment. You also must be willing to undergo a DBS check. Please be aware that the role involves teaching outside of the standard academic term time.
The position is available immediately and the successful candidate should be available to commence employment as soon as possible. PMET delivers Professional Military Education to the RAF as part of its second successive long-term contract to design and deliver tailored education packages to the Royal Air Force. In 2020, PMET designed and delivered the UK's first blended learning course for phase one officer cadet training and the Aviator Command Squadron. Today, the course covers a wide spectrum of disciplines and subjects, including international security, military theory, military history, international relations, space security, and cyber security. The course is delivered through a bespoke combination of online materials, such as videos, podcasts, and interactive packages, complemented and enhanced by in-person teaching from a dedicated team of expert tutors.
PMET delivers courses at two RAF sites: at RAF College Cranwell in Lincolnshire, and at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire, home of the Aviator Command Squadron and the training site for all RAF non-commissioned officers.
Please see the specific job description for details of this role. This post will be 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) and open-ended and will be based at the University of Portsmouth. There are opportunities to explore flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
Informal inquiries can be made to the Director of the Portsmouth Military Education Team, Dr Tom Smith - tom.smith@port.ac.uk
Interviews are scheduled to be held online on Monday 23d of June, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and instructed accordingly.
