The University of Aberdeen is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Practical Theology within the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy and Art History. This is a two-year, full-time position funded by the McDonald Agape Foundation as part of a major interdisciplinary research project entitled Theology, Mental Health and Dementia Across and Within Cultures, led by Professor John Swinton FBA, FRSE.
The project seeks to explore the theological dimensions of mental health and dementia across a range of cultural contexts, with the aim of developing innovative theological frameworks capable of reshaping both academic and public discourse. The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the development of a foundational research monograph, undertake independent research aligned with the project’s themes, and help coordinate a range of academic and public-facing activities. The role includes conference organisation, research administration, and participation in international scholarly networks, including the formation of a new specialist interest group within the American Academy of Religion.
The Fellow will benefit from mentoring and professional development opportunities within a dynamic, research-intensive environment. Candidates must hold a PhD in Practical Theology or a closely related field by the time of appointment and demonstrate a clear interest in theology and mental health. They should show evidence of research potential, strong communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience in interdisciplinary research, qualitative methods, or public theology is desirable but not essential.
Salary will be at the first point on Grade 6, £38,249 per annum.
As this is an externally funded vacancy, it is available until June 2027.
Informal enquiries should be made to Prof John Swinton, e-mail: j.swinton@abdn.ac.uk
