About the role
We welcome applications for a fixed-term, full time (1 FTE for two years) Assistant Professor in Anthropology (Education and Research) to join our collegial and supportive team.

Under the direction of the Head of Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Social Anthropology. An expertise in religion, politics and theories of global transformation, would be desirable. You will also hold responsibility for a group of Academic Advisees; supervise undergraduate theses and master’s dissertations; and be responsible for other convened teaching and administrative contributions as directed by the Head of Department.
You will be expected to conduct and deliver high-quality research, engagement and impact work that complements the research of the Department.

Our research ranks among the best in the UK and the World. In REF 2021, the Department was ranked 7th in the UK for overall research performance and 8th in the UK for our world-leading research impact. We are ranked 12th in the UK and are in the top 100 globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings.
The Department is committed to the highest quality of teaching. Sussex Anthropology achieved excellent scores in all NSS categories, and every year several faculty members receive University teaching awards.
Sussex anthropology is distinctive in its progressive interdisciplinary thinking, and in combining empirical and theoretical inquiry with a commitment to understand, interpret and intervene in an increasingly complex, changing and unequal world. We engage with the most pressing issues of our times around inequality, social justice, health, gender and sexuality, sustainability and climate justice, transformation in work and labour, geopolitics, migration and development, amongst others. Our expertise straddles all continents, from China and South-East Asia to South and Central Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
About you
Ideally, you will have a PhD in Anthropology or a closely related field or be very near completing one.
Your research and teaching interests should align with those of the Department. Applications are welcome from candidates with an expertise in religion, politics and power, with a strong grounding in anthropological theory. Regional specialism is open. Interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research are particularly welcome. Candidates are expected to either complement or expand the existing research strengths of the Department.
You will ideally have previous experience of teaching Anthropology at degree level and will be passionate about delivering high quality teaching and support to students.
You will be a collegiate individual with an enthusiasm to participate fully as an active and integral member of the Department.
