Research Associate

Imperial College London

Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £48,056 to £56,345
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 22nd May 2025
Closes: 21st June 2025
Job Ref: MED05242

Location:

Level 9, Centre for Inflammatory Disease, Department of Immunology and Inflammation, Hammersmith Campus, Imperial College London. A hybrid working pattern would be considered. We are a predominantly office-based group and aim for a minimum of 3 days in person working per week.

About the role:

This role drives research seeking to discover new knowledge with the aim of transforming the lives of people living with the most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis. We are seeking an experienced post-doctoral researcher with expertise and experience in biostatistics or bioinformatics to join Dr Fiona Watt’s Osteoarthritis Research Group, to help drive our projects forward. This research focusses on those who have earlier stage osteoarthritis (or risk factors for this), and the analysis of factors including protein markers within the joint that are associated with risk of progression of osteoarthritis over time. This knowledge is fundamental for successful translational work towards future clinical trials in the area, another focus for the group.

The role is supported by a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and by Versus Arthritis funding.

What you would be doing:

You will plan, design and carry out the statistical analysis of molecular and clinical data, working both independently and collaborating with other researchers to contribute to the delivery of research objectives. You will present findings in a variety of ways, including at regular meetings within the department and with external collaborators and writing and submitting publications. You will participate in our group’s wider programme of research, helping to guide and direct the work of others in the team.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone who has the drive, appropriate training and experience to thrive in taking a leading role in this project. You will already have extensive practical experience in organising and analysing complex or large ‘omics datasets, such as proteomic datasets such as SomaScan or expression datasets. You will enjoy dealing with collaborators and working in multidisciplinary research, where you are able to develop and apply new concepts and show a creative approach to problem solving. The post holder will have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and advanced computer programming skills including R.

What we can offer you:

  • Exciting project-focussed work which spans molecular and clinical data, to further cutting edge translational research in this area
  • A chance to work alongside and collaborate with field-leading researchers at Imperial, Oxford and beyond and broaden your networks
  • A friendly, welcoming department (recently renewed Athena Swan Silver status)
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
