Research Associate in Nanoparticles for Enhanced 3D Imaging of Soil Biology

Imperial College London - Department of Materials - Faculty of Engineering

Location: London
Salary: £43,003 to £54,063 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 23rd May 2025
Closes: 20th June 2025
Job Ref: ENG03526

About the role:

We are seeking to recruit a Researcher to develop new nano-particle-based methods of X-ray Computed Tomography (X-CT) imaging of biological structures and transport phenomena in soil. Soil is foundational for agriculture and for wild ecosystems and our awareness of its importance is rising as we face new ecological challenges. Modern science reveals soil as a multiscale 3D biological system, where structures such as fungal networks and plant roots coexist with the transport of nutrients and pathogens through complex networks of micropores. in contrast to the extraordinary sophistication of medical imaging, 3D imaging of soil using methods such as microscale X-CT remains at an early stage. The project will develop novel nanoparticles as targeted X-CT contrast agents. This will enable us to generate a unique vision of soil’s complex structure and dynamics. Key challenges are imaging the flow of water driven by plant roots, as well as fungal networks. The position would suit a researcher with experience in wet-lab nanoparticle synthesis and also an interest in imaging/microscopy.

What you would be doing:

You will produce independent and original research as part of a collaborative team project. Specifically, you will carry out microscale X-CT imaging of soil-plant systems using our nanoparticle contrast system. There will also be a need to synthesize and characterize the nanoparticles using our established technologies.

What we are looking for:

You must have a PhD or an equivalent research degree, with research experience in materials, bioengineering, chemical engineering or a closely related field. You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a committed approach to teamwork and to cross-disciplinary research. You must also have a creative approach to problem solving.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
  • We provide a wide-ranging benefits package that includes resources, tools and networks to promote a positive working environment.
  • Pensions – excellent employer contributions
  • Season Ticket loan – interest free.
  • Childcare facilities – Early Years Education Centre
  • Childcare vouchers – salary sacrifice scheme.
  • Staff accommodation
  • Our flagship sports centre and gym in South Kensington Campus
