Job description:
A great opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to join an internationally-renowned research group in Structural Engineering and Materials, within the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. We are looking for someone with a passion for research into probabilistic seismic hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment, who has and wants to apply their skills to develop the next generation of risk assessment and management tools to help enhance seismic resilience of Uganda. The role will focus on developing probabilistic seismic hazard maps, vulnerability curves, exposure models for Uganda to quantify seismic risk and develop seismic risk mitigation strategies to reduce future seismic losses.
You will use your research skills to become an essential member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded ‘Building Disaster Resilience to Seismic Hazards in Uganda’ project team. You will mainly work within the Earthquake Engineering team, which has a long track record of developing seismic risk assessment and management frameworks for developing countries but will also collaborate closely with academic and non-academic project partners in Uganda. The role will include analysing, categorising, documenting collected seismological, geological, tectonic and built environment data, mapping the data in GIS environment, development of seismic hazard, vulnerability and risk models, analysing and interpreting results, and presenting findings. This role provides an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in a multi-national research environment integrating both engineering, and modelling.
Educated to PhD level within the subject area of Civil and/or Structural Engineering, ideally with seismic risk assessment and management expertise, you will bring essential specialist knowledge and expertise to seismic hazard, vulnerability and exposure model development, within a multi-national research team. The aim of this research is to enhance seismic safety and resilience of communities living in Uganda by improving the capabilities of partner academic institutions, and governmental and non-governmental organisations in Uganda in understanding and managing seismic risks. If you are passionate about a career in seismic risk assessment and management research, then we would love to hear from you.
We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
