BACKGROUND

The Defence & Security programme at Turing is looking to expand a team of data scientists working on real-world problems in the radio frequency domain. This technical role sits within the EME theme in the Defence AI Research (DARe) Centre and is focused on performing horizontal (underpinning) research.

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Application of modern AI techniques/algorithms (e.g. GNNs, transformers, autoencoders, reinforcement learning) for automated real time analysis and exploitation of multiple data sources.
  • Developing novel multi-modal AI approaches to fusion of data from multiple sensors. 
  • Developing and assuring novel state of the art AI architectures across a variety of domains including radio frequency, edge AI, and AI security.
  • Development of physics-based simulators and numerical modelling of complex processes (inc. developing of Physics-informed Neural Networks).
  • Investigate assurable and adversarial AI including the determination as to the scope and limits of a model when being applied to a different area to its training.

Person Specification

  • PhD/equivalent professional experience in engineering, advanced physics, data science, mathematics, statistics or other related discipline
  • Fluency in one or more modern programming languages.

Experience in:

  • Applying Machine Learning to real world problems or strong theoretical knowledge and academic experience with Machine Learning and adjacent topics.
  • Developing novel algorithms for transmitting, processing and analysing radio frequency signals or physics modelling.
  • Working with customers to identify, understand and refine problems, scoping data science work to solve them.
  • Publishing research outputs 
  • Research with a focus on AI for physics/maths problem sets or Radar or Communications and Networks.
  • Develping and deploying technologies in support of Defence and National Security organisations (desirable).
  • Must be eligible (and willing to undergo if not held already) for UK/NATO security clearance.

Terms and Conditions

This full-time post is offered on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2027. The annual salary is £45,505 to £51,241 plus excellent benefits, including flexible working and family friendly policies, Employee-only benefits guide | The Alan Turing Institute.

All applicants must be willing to undergo, and capable of achieving, SC clearance once in post. A successful candidate will be subject to a Dstl research workers check at offer stage.

The Alan Turing Institute is based at the British Library, in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter. We expect staff to come to our office at least 4 days per month. Some roles may require more days in the office; the hiring manager will be able to confirm this during the interview.
