BACKGROUND

The Defence & Security programme at Turing is looking to expand a newly formed team of data scientists working on real-world problems in the radio frequency domain aligned with defending and securing the UK.  The in the Defence Artificial Intelligence Research (DARe) centre is  working in domains as diverse as: future sensing, space systems, human-machine teaming, synthetic environments, and edge AI. Senior Data Scientists perform investigations based on tasking from D&S partners to derisk new technologies and create proof-of-concept work to inform future research. 

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Application of modern AI techniques/algorithms (e.g. GNNs, transformers, autoencoders, reinforcement learning) for automated real time analysis and exploitation of multiple data sources
  • Develop novel multi-modal AI approaches to the fusion of data from multiple sensors 
  • Develop and assure novel state of the art AI architectures across a variety of domains including radio frequency, edge AI, and AI security
  • Develop new projects in conjunction with colleagues, authoring research proposals and agreeing involvement in activities across the institute.
  • Provide technical leadership and project management on multi-person projects (2 to 4 people) 

Person Specification

  • PhD or significant professional experience in the area with both computer programming and advanced statistical or numerical methods.
  • Practical experience applying Machine Learning to real world problems or strong theoretical knowledge and academic experience with Machine Learning and adjacent topics.
  • Demonstrable experience developing novel algorithms for transmitting, processing and analysing radio frequency signals or AI for physics/maths/engineering/communications and networks/radar problem sets.
  • Fluency in one or more modern programming languages.
  • Experience working with customers to identify, understand and refine problems, scoping data science work to solve them.
  • Experience leading a research project in AI or Radar or Communications and Networks.
  • Strong publication record.
  • Direct experience developing and deploying technologies in support of Defence and National Security organisations (desirable).
  • Eligibility for UK/NATO security clearance

Terms and Conditions

This full-time post is offered on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2027. The annual salary is £54,611 to £62,381 plus excellent benefits, including flexible working and family friendly policies, Employee-only benefits guide | The Alan Turing Institute. 

All applicants must be willing to undergo, and capable of achieving, SC clearance once in post. A successful candidate will be subject to a Dstl research workers check at offer stage.

The Alan Turing Institute is based at the British Library. We expect staff to come to our office at least 4 days per month; the hiring manager will be able to confirm this during the interview.
