We are seeking a clinical trainee to undertake a PhD in an area relating to outbreak prone infectious disease of public health importance or zoonoses.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with a world leading team delivering research that is relevant to public health in the UK.
This clinical PhD opportunity is funded by the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections (EZI). You will therefore join the NIHR HPRU-EZI.
The HPRU-EZI is a partnership between the University of Liverpool, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), University of Oxford, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), in collaboration with University of Glasgow. HPRU-EZI has been running since 2014 and supports and strengthens UK-HSA in its role protecting England from emerging infections and zoonoses (i.e. those which spread from animals to humans). HPRU-EZI has played significant roles in the past in the UK response to Ebola, Zika, COVID-19 and mpox.
We will continue to address the major emerging threats; these are transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks (e.g. dengue and Lyme), the respiratory route (e.g. COVID-19 and influenza), or directly through contact (e.g. Lassa fever).
You will work across theme 2 of the HPRU-EZI, which runs three clinical studies: ARBO-UK, Lyme-UK and ISARIC. The theme lead, and supervisor of this post, will be Professor Lance Turtle.
Key responsibilities and duties include working collaboratively across the HPRU-EZI to ensure the smooth delivery of these clinical studies; engaging sites in setting up to recruit participants, and monitoring progress; engaging in PPI and research inclusion activity to ensure the studies are recruiting from the right populations, and that patient groups have a voice in determining the research direction; analysing data and deriving scientific conclusions from the studies; writing papers reporting the study findings.
This post is offered on a fixed term basis for three years.
Pre-application enquiries are encouraged via email to lturtle@liverpool.ac.uk and hpruei@liverpool.ac.uk
If you require a visa to work in the UK, the University of Liverpool may be able to support your application for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker Route. Or there maybe the option to support your application under the Global Talent Visa, Depending on your circumstances you may find you can apply for one independently without University support.
