The role
The post holder’s main responsibilities are supporting the ongoing operation of the Joint Open Infrastructure for Network Research (JOINER) platform, which underpins research across 15 UK nodes and one in Ireland, with further expansion expected. Working closely with engineers and system administrators, you will assist in the setup, configuration, and maintenance of servers, networking equipment, storage systems, and related infrastructure. Your responsibilities will include monitoring system usage, identifying technical issues, supporting hardware installations and upgrades, and ensuring best practices in data centre environments. You will also contribute to onboarding new terminals, users and documenting procedures, helping improve service reliability and user experience across the JOINER network.
What will you be doing?
We are seeking a skilled and hands-on senior specialist technician to join our research-focused environment, where innovation and technical expertise are key to support business objectives of the JOINER project. The ideal candidate will have practical experience with the installation and basic configuration of network equipment, including Juniper, Fortinet, Cisco etc. and, bare metals including generic servers and storage systems (SAN, NAS, DAS) like Dell, HPE, supermicro, and basic configuration like BMC and management interfaces. Proficiency in installing operating systems (Windows server, Linux – different distros) is also essential. Additionally, experience working in environments with 5G Radio units is desired, along with a generic understanding of 5G and Wi-Fi access points. Familiarity with networks, structured network cabling, as well as IT asset management and tracking systems, is also required. This role demands a proactive, detail-oriented individual with the ability to support dynamic research activities and ensure smooth technical operations.
