Salary Grade 3 SP27 to Grade 4 SP31 £35,116 to £39,355 per annum depending on experience.

Hours: 37 hours per week (Full time)

About The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join the Algal Signalling group led by Dr Glen Wheeler at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth. The successful candidate will work on an exciting Leverhulme Trust funded project to examine the evolution of cell signalling mechanisms in unicellular algae.

Multicellular organisms, such as animals and plants, have developed mechanisms for cell-cell communication that allow transmission of information over long distances and coordination of responses at the whole organism level. However, the evolution of these signalling mechanisms remain poorly understood. This project will examine cell-cell communication in unicellular algae, using marine diatoms as a model system. Diatoms are abundant algae that underpin productivity in many aquatic ecosystems. We recently discovered that diatoms possess sophisticated signalling mechanisms for cell-cell communication, resembling those found in multicellular organisms. The project will explore the physiological and ecological roles of cell-cell communication in diatoms and in other eukaryote lineages. We aim to identify novel signalling processes in unicellular organisms and shed light on the evolution of complex signalling networks in multicellular organisms.

Candidates will have experience in cell physiology and genetic manipulation (ideally in algae), with expertise in fluorescent microscopy and cell signalling.

We are looking for a passionate, team-oriented, independent-thinking individual with a PhD or equivalent in plant/algal biology with skills in molecular biology and microscopy. You will join a dynamic research group working on diverse aspects of algal physiology. The Principal Investigator will provide in-depth training and supervision of the candidates through regular meetings both 1-2-1 and with the wider team. Additionally, the PDRA will have the opportunity to present at scientific conferences, prepare manuscripts and engage in activities to further their professional development.

• Pension scheme – the MBA will contribute 10% of basic salary into a defined contribution scheme with staff making a 3% minimum contribution. The MBA will match additional employee contributions up to an additional 5%
