About the role:

Are you a strategic communicator with a passion for science and storytelling? Join the Department of Materials at Imperial College London as our new Senior Communications Officer, where you’ll play a key role in shaping and amplifying the voice of one of the UK’s leading centres for materials science and engineering.

This is a unique opportunity to lead the Department’s communications strategy, promoting world-class research, cutting-edge teaching, and impactful outreach initiatives. You’ll work closely with academics, students, and professional services staff to deliver engaging content that connects with diverse audiences - from prospective students and industry partners to alumni and the wider public.

You’ll be the Department’s communications lead, managing digital and print content, developing campaigns, and overseeing social media, websites, newsletters, and internal communications. You’ll also contribute to student recruitment and alumni engagement, and collaborate with university-wide teams to ensure our messaging aligns with Imperial’s strategic goals.

What you would be doing:

  • Lead the development and delivery of the Department’s communications strategy
  • Create and manage engaging content across digital platforms, including social media, websites, blogs, and newsletters
  • Coordinate promotional materials and print publications for events, recruitment, and outreach
  • Work with academic and professional services teams to highlight achievements and support internal communications
  • Build and manage strong relationships across the College and with external stakeholders, including freelancers, agencies, and alumni
  • Oversee departmental social media channels and digital campaigns, analysing performance and identifying opportunities for growth
  • Support student recruitment efforts, including managing a team of student ambassadors and developing campaign content
  • Champion inclusive and accessible communication that reflects the Department’s values and the College’s mission

What we are looking for:

We’re seeking an experienced, proactive communicator who thrives in a collaborative academic environment.

You’ll bring:

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to tailor content to different audiences and platforms
  • Experience managing digital content, social media accounts, and newsletters
  • A strategic mindset and an eye for creative opportunities to raise profile and engagement
  • Experience working with design and branding for both print and digital outputs
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines
  • A strong commitment to inclusivity, community-building, and continuous improvement

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to use science for humanity.
  • Benefit from a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days’ annual leave and generous pension schemes).
  • Access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day one, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and cycle-to work scheme.
  • Interest-free season ticket loan schemes for travel.
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
