Department
The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies (LiFTS) was one of the foundational departments in the University of Essex and is an exciting, interdisciplinary department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other.
Literature was one of the founding subjects at the University of Essex. With strengths in American (Caribbean and US), postcolonial, comparative and world literature(s) from the early modern to the contemporary period, LiFTS offers a dynamic and broad literature provision.
Duties of the Role
The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies (LiFTS) is an exciting, interdisciplinary department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other.
We are seeking to appoint a 1-year fixed-term Lecturer in Literature (0.9 FTE), with experience in teaching literature at undergraduate level. We are particularly interested in candidates with specialisms in twentieth- and twenty-first literature, comparative literature, critical theory, and Holocaust writing who are able to lecture and lead seminars in both first- and second-year introductory modules and final-year research-led modules. In particular, the candidate will be expected to lead and teach the first-year modules LT182 Text Up Close and LT171: Introduction to European Literature and the final-year module LT390: The Limits of Representation: The Holocaust in Literature and Film, and teach weekly seminars on the first-year module LT111: Origins and Transformations in Literature and Drama and the second-year module LT204: Criticism: Practice and Theory. The candidate would also be expected to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will have substantial experience of teaching literature at undergraduate and or postgraduate level, with a relevant doctoral level degree in Literature or English or equivalent professional experience or practice. The postholder will also have some experience of designing and planning of learning activities, developing effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance. The candidate will be expected to show an ability and willingness to enhance the Department’s education strengths and areas of expertise. The candidate will also demonstrate commitment to respect individual learners and diverse learning communities and to promote participation and equality of opportunity for all learners via student-centred practice.
