The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies was one of the foundational departments at the University of Essex and is an exciting, interdisciplinary department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other. Our drama academics are professional theatre practitioners, working in the theatre world as writers, directors, actors and theatre-makers, as well as being researchers of theatre history. Students perform and produce work in our state-of-the-art Lakeside Theatre, and develop a wide range of creative, critical and practical skills that open doors to a future in the theatre, cultural industries or a wide range of other graduate careers.
Duties of the Role
We are now seeking to appoint an enthusiastic part-time Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Studies (fixed-term until 31 July 2027).
The successful candidate for this post will have the ability to teach Drama at undergraduate and MA level with particular specialisms in these areas: writing audio drama, Naturalism and eco-theatre, playwriting, first-year introductory Theatre Studies modules. An ability to teach both through practical drama workshops and through theory-based lectures and seminars is essential. The successful candidate would be expected to supervise third-year undergraduate and MA dissertational projects, both practical performance-based work as well as desk-based critical theses. The successful candidate would also be expected to act as personal tutor to undergraduate students; and assist in some departmental administrative and recruitment activities such as Applicant days and Open Days.
The modules that the candidate would be teaching on are: TH142-4-AU Autobiographical Theatre-making; LT146-4-SP Writing Audio Drama; TH243-5-AU Tragedy and Theatre Writing; TH831-6-FY Independent Practical Theatre Project (Supervising 3rd year dissertation projects in Spring term only); LT913-7-AU Dramatic Structure (MA module).

Drama at Essex has long foregrounded synergies between creative practice and scholarship, and the candidate would be expected to engage with these synergies where possible across teaching and student supervisions; and also assess practical Theatre projects.
Skills and qualifications required
The post-holder will have specialist expertise in Eco-Theatre, Naturalism, facilitating practical Playwriting and teaching general introductory Drama modules, with a relevant doctoral degree or equivalent professional practice and an ability to teach key texts in these areas. Additionally, they should have experience and knowledge of the theatre industry and/or Theatre practice-as-research, with an understanding of the requirements for assessing practical elements of Theatre modules. The successful candidate will bring substantial experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways. They will have a clear understanding of how students learn both generally and within their subject/disciplinary areas, be committed to the ongoing and effective evaluation of their teaching, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
