Applications are invited for a Human Tissue Governance Coordinator to assist with a wide range of tasks to ensure that tissue governance, ethics and biosafety standards are maintained across the Early Cancer Institute (ECI) and the wider University of Cambridge Oncology Department.

About the role:

Based within the Early Cancer Institute on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the appointee will work closely with all PIs within the ECI, plus the main operations team, to ensure that the work carried out at the ECI is compliant with the Data Protection Act, Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and Biosafety Audits, and that studies are undertaken within the boundaries of ethical and R&D approvals and in accordance with statutory requirements and principles of Good Clinical Practice/Good Laboratory Practice and GDPR.

The post-holder will have overall responsibility for all tissue collection/sample processing, storage and data management (using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), such as Achiever) related to clinical samples or translational studies within the ECI. The role requires oversight of human tissue sample compliance/governance and HTA audits. The post-holder will also serve as the institute's biosafety officer. They will oversee training of ECI and Oncology department staff in the legal, ethical and consent requirements in research using human tissue samples, as well as operational and safety training for all staff who work with human tissue.

About you:

Ideally you will have:

  •  Research compliance and governance expertise.
  •  A good working knowledge of the requirements of the Human Tissue Act (2004), HTA Codes of Practice and MHRA/GCP(L) guidelines as applied to research, including Clinical Trials, using   human tissue samples, and experience with HTA audits.
  •  Significant relevant experience within a research laboratory or research core service
  •  Excellent IT skills, including a high level of competence with Microsoft Office and working with complex databases and LIMS.
  •  Adaptability, problem-solving skills involving sound interpretation of relevant policies and procedures, mature judgement, and ability to use discretion and diplomacy.
  •  Excellent communication skills, including scientific report writing, customer service skills, and the ability to deal confidently and diplomatically with a range of staff at all levels.
