Applications are invited for a motivated laboratory research technician, to work with Simon Johnson at the LifeArc Rare Respiratory Disease Centre, with expertise in cell culture and in vitro modelling. The aim of the work is to develop in vitro models of rare lung diseases which are suitable for high-throughput drug screening by our collaborators. The Rare Respiratory Disease Centre is a collaboration between the Universities of Nottingham, Edinburgh, Cambridge, UCL, Dundee and Southampton funded by LifeArc for five years in the first instance.

You will join a team, led by Professor Simon Johnson, whose main areas of research include understanding the molecular and cellular basis of respiratory disease. The team includes post-doctoral research assistants, a clinical fellow other technical staff and collaborators, housed within Nottingham’s BioDiscovery Institute.

The project includes improving existing and developing and characterising better models of rare lung diseases including lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). The successful candidate will be expected to maintain and work with primary cells, have responsibility for human tissue authority regulatory compliance and play a key role in the day-to-day running of a busy laboratory area.

Candidates must hold a degree, HNC or equivalent in a relevant subject, with significant research experience and good organisational skills. A strong background in primary cell culture, molecular biology and imaging would be an advantage, but training can be offered. The successful candidate will gain highly transferable skills including a range of techniques used in primary human cell biology, imaging and transcriptomics.

The post is offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours per week).

For informal enquiries please contact Simon Johnson (simon.johnson@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
