We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a new collaboration between Associate Professor Katherine Bull’s renal pathology group and GlaxoSmithKline, within the Oxford-GSK Institute for Molecular and Computational Medicine (IMCM). You will test GSK assets and targets in established models of podocyte and mesangial cell pathology relevant to glomerular diseases. You will establish and validate microfluidic co-culture systems using human glomerular cells and benchmark these platforms against human kidney multi-omic and spatial datasets. These systems will be further developed to model immune-mediated kidney injury. Quantitative and reproducible read-outs from these assays will be correlated with human kidney ‘omics data to evaluate the impact of pathway modulation, ultimately enhancing the clinical relevance of experimental findings and supporting the development of novel therapies.
You will be responsible for planning, managing and conducting the academic research project and associated activities; taking direction from the Principal Investigator and other colleagues in the laboratory as appropriate, and adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocols. You will test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate, and develop research questions, analyse detailed and complex qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, and contribute original ideas for new research projects. You will coordinate multiple aspects of work to deliver novel research data in accordance with established timelines set between you and the Principal Investigator, and adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols to support research. You will also contribute to or write research articles at an international level for peer-reviewed journals. You will be responsible for formally presenting your research and represent the research group at internal, national and international conferences and meetings and will input scientifically into the research group both at meetings and practically where requested or appropriate. You will share data and findings and present to project leads at GSK.
It is essential that you hold a PhD/DPhil (or are close to completion) in a biomedical or other relevant subject. You will need to demonstrate skills and experience relevant to biomedical laboratory research, including cell culture techniques, and show a clear interest in the research topic, particularly renal pathology. A strong academic track record is important, including having published in high-impact journals and presented at international meetings. You should be capable of managing your own academic research and associated activities, contributing ideas for new research projects and supporting income generation efforts. You must be able to work with meticulous attention to detail, and show evidence of excellent interpersonal skills and leadership. Strong verbal and written communication skills are vital, along with the ability to convey research ideas and results clearly and logically, and to interact confidently and effectively with colleagues and the broader research community. A conscientious and enthusiastic approach to work, alongside excellent planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills, is also essential.
