Salary: £48,056 to £56,345 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 9th July 2025
Closes: 10th August 2025
Job Ref: ENG03603

About the role:

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to carry out experimental measurements and modelling of the thermophysical properties of hydrogen. The project is funded by the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research and is needed to support the development of flow standards for liquefied energy gases.

What you would be doing:

The project will focus mainly on very precise measurements of the speed of sound in liquefied and supercritical hydrogen as a means of determining the ratio of ortho- and para-spin isomers. The sound speed measurements will be accompanied by measurements of the ortho-para ratio obtained from an on-line Raman spectrometer. You will also be collaborating with European partners on other thermophysical property measurements, including the density of liquefied natural gas.

What we are looking for:

You should have knowledge, skills and experience as follows:

  • Experience in thermophysical-property measurement within a research environment
  • A strong publication record in relevant refereed journals
  • Knowledge of thermodynamic and transport properties of fluids
  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of literature
  • Ability to carry out an experimental risk assessment
  • Good IT skills and experience of numerical analysis

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
