We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to develop mass spectrometry methods for characterizing protein S-acylation, which is a prominent yet understudied post translational modification.

We are seeking a BBSRC sLoLa funded postdoctoral research associate to work in the group of Dr Rebecca Beveridge at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The project will focus on the development of intact protein mass spectrometry methods to study S-acylation, which is a prominent post-translational modification of cellular proteins involving the attachment of fatty acids onto cysteine residues. This process, which is mediated by “zDHHC” enzymes, affects protein localisation, protein interactions and stability, and defects in S-acylation are linked to a range of conditions including cancer, diabetes and neurological disorders.
You will be part of a broader team of >20 researchers undertaking an integrated analysis of S-acylation dynamics and its importance in cell physiology (https://www.ukri.org/news/bbsrc-injects-20-million-into-long-term-discovery-research/). Successful outcomes of this research could have profound implications on our understanding of this important post-translational modification and lead to impact in the treatment of a variety of diseases.
To achieve the goals of the project, it is desired that the candidate will have expertise in the biophysical characterisation of proteins, and/or experience in mass spectrometry. Experience in protein mass spectrometry, and/or chromatography would be advantageous. The candidate will take on leadership roles, including the supervision of additional research projects where PhD students are supporting the core research programme.
To be considered for the role, you will be educated to PhD level in chemistry, biochemistry or a related discipline, or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have a developing ability to conduct individual research work, and to disseminate results. You will be able to plan and organise your own workload effectively and be able to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.
Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: relevant work experience, experience of relevant student supervision, and/or experience of knowledge exchange related activities.
