University of Essex - UK Data Archive

Location: Colchester, Hybrid
Salary: £26,338 to £29,959
Hours: Full Time, Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

UK Data Archive

The UK Data Archive is seeking to appoint a Data Access and Use Assistant to join our customer facing Data Access Services team, to support the UK Data Service’s data access and Helpdesk operations.

The UK Data Archive is the lead organisation of the UK Data Service, which provides unified access to regional, national and international social and economic data, and provides support, guidance and training for the development of skills in data curation and use.

Duties of the Role

The post holder will have responsibility for supporting data access and user inquiries, and data delivery for the Service. You will provide frontline support for the Service’s Helpdesk and data access operations, and will process applications for service registration and user accounts, as well as, checking and processing access requests for data requiring approval, working closely with the Secure Lab Support and training administration teams.

A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the job pack.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful applicant will hold an Undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification or equivalent professional experience.

Previous support work with academics or students would be beneficial, but is not essential, as other demonstrable forms of customer service experience are equally valuable. This is a customer-facing role, so you must be customer-focussed, with well-developed ‘soft’ skills, particularly in verbal communication, conflict resolution and collaboration. You will also be a clear and confident presenter, as the role involves co-presenting scripted webinars.

Whilst it would be a benefit to have a good understanding of social science research and data, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate that you have used data in a research project setting, such as a dissertation.

In addition, you must have very strong IT skills, including proficient use of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, as running, collating and reporting metrics are a crucial part of the post, as is the use of online communication platforms.

Finally, you will have excellent time management, attention to detail and organisational skills and full training will be provided.

This post is fixed term for two years in the first instance. Whilst this a full-time post (36 hours per week), a job share arrangement could be considered for the right candidates and we would similarly welcome applications from those looking to work 0.5 FTE (18 hours per week) on this basis.

This post involves access to Government systems, information or data and will be subject to the staff vetting process. Further information can be found in the job pack.
