This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Head Porter to join the Porter’s Team at Hughes Hall.
Job Purpose
We are looking for an organised and approachable individual to lead our dedicated team of Porters.
The Head Porter plays a central leadership role at the heart of Hughes Hall, ensuring the smooth and professional operation of the Porters’ Lodge, the key hub for information, support, and security for students, senior members, staff, visitors, and guests. As a highly visible and trusted figure, the Head Porter is instrumental in maintaining the welcoming, mature and secure environment for which Hughes Hall is renowned. From leading ceremonial processions to welcoming visitors, the Head Porter ensures the Lodge is always a welcoming space and provides excellence in service.
The role involves overseeing security operations, supporting student welfare and discipline, managing prestigious College events, and contributing to emergency planning and operational leadership. There is a strong emphasis on development, service improvement, and professional standards, therefore the ideal candidate will be an experienced team leader with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, able to manage a 24/7 front-of-house operation with discretion, tact and professionalism. They will have strong organisational ability, sound judgement, and the confidence to lead in emergency situations.
While experience in a college, university, or similar institutional environment is ideal, we also welcome applicants with other relevant backgrounds. A solid understanding of health and safety, fire safety, and security protocols is essential, as is a friendly approachable manner, calm and authoritative presence, a rapport with students and staff alike, and a proactive, solution-oriented approach to challenges.
