About the role:

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is looking to appoint a Technician (level 3a) to provide essential support to the state-of-the-art ACE Prototyping and Manufacturing Workshop for both teaching and research activities, as well as to the Research Shared Spaces in the Dyson Building. The facilities offer technical support for innovative entrepreneurial prototyping activities within teaching, research, and other areas associated with Design Engineering. Students and staff will develop workshop skills, applying them to their degree programmes and individual projects.

The post holder will be a member of the technical team and will report to the Technical Services and Safety Officer. The Technician will be expected to divide their time between the ACE Prototyping and Manufacturing Workshop and the Research Shared Spaces in the Dyson Building.

What you would be doing:

You will provide engineering consultancy, design, and production services to users across the department. This includes the instruction and hands-on teaching of prototyping and manufacturing techniques, including manual machine operation, to workshop users of all experience levels.

To meet research and teaching project deadlines and objectives, you will provide technical support and organise work output. You will be required to deliver inductions and supervision to users, ensuring adherence to workshop protocols.

What we are looking for:

Knowledge of both digital and analogue electronics, including familiarity with modern components, devices, and programming techniques relevant to teaching environments, and experience in Engineering or Design, or education to a minimum of BTEC/HNC level (or equivalent) are essential in this role. You must be flexible and responsive to the evolving needs of the School.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in a multi-discipline workshop, preferably within a teaching environment,
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of workshop equipment,
  • Proficiency in the use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools,
  • Good understanding of workplace health and safety regulations and procedures, and
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical workshop practices and instrumentation.
