About the role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for two Structures Workshop/Laboratory Technician to develop the design and manufacture of bespoke equipment for use within the Structures Research Laboratories, whilst ensuring that safe and effective working practices are carried out.
The post holders will have a key role in the development of testing rig setups and the modification/re-purposing of existing rigs and equipment. Common activities include machining, cutting, water-jetting, welding, assembling and working with cabling and hydraulics.
The roles are varied and will involve working in both the Workshop to manufacture the equipment and the Laboratory to carry out installation and setup.

This is a full time, permanent post.
What you would be doing:
You will carry out the design of test setups/rigs using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software allowing them to be visualised and discussed prior to manufacture.
You will also manufacture test setup/rigs using a wide range of machine tools and equipment including manual milling machines and lathes, and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines.
You will ensure that all equipment used is functioning safely and correctly, trouble shooting problems and arranging maintenance and repair as necessary.
You will also provide guidance, advice and support to academics, researchers and students in the design of laboratory equipment and test pieces with reference to structural experimentation.
