About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Thermal Engineer to join the world-renowned Power Electronics, Machines and Control Institute (PEMC) at the University of Nottingham, where you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge electrification technologies for power generation, marine, aerospace, and automotive applications.

The role will involve the application of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamic principles to support PEMC’s activities, including the development of rotating machines. Working as part of a multi-physics team, the ideal candidate will contribute to the design and analysis of thermal and fluid system and components, as well providing relevant thermal and fluids expertise to support the testing and analysis of empirical data derived from test rigs. The role holder will be expected to plan and conduct work using both proven and novel approaches or methodologies and techniques (numerical and analytical) appropriate to the type of research and will be responsible for the dissemination of their work to a to a range of audiences. 

About the Team

The PEMC institute has grown exponentially and now has over 200 members, 24 academics and circa 130 PhD students, researchers, and engineers. The group offers state-of-the-art facilities spanning 3500m², capable of handling up to 5MW for construction and testing. Our team is world leading in advanced electrical machines design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing. 

About You

You should have a PhD or nearing completion of a PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience in research area. Here are some examples of the type of expertise we are looking for, however this list is not exhaustive and exclusive:

  • Ability to analyse and illuminate data, interpret reports, critically evaluate information and generate new insights to support research.
  • Practical experience of applying the specialist skills, approaches and techniques required for the role, including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics principles.
  • Experience in use of research methodologies and techniques to work within area.
  • Application of mechanical engineering concepts to the design and analysis of components and assemblies.
  • Familiarity with experimental testing of thermal and/or fluid behaviour, instrumentation, data acquisition and error analysis.
