The role
The successful candidate will be based in the Modern Synthetic Chemistry Laboratories in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol. Support for synthetic chemistry is second to none, with excellent MS, NMR and X-ray facilities, each supported by dedicated specialist staff. Preparative HPLC is also available. On-line resources are first class, with most journals and SciFinder and Reaxys databases accessible on-line.
The post is available from 1st September 2025 with appointment in the first instance for 7 months. Applications should include a cover letter and a curriculum vitae. The candidates should also provide the names of two referees who have been former supervisors on synthetic organic chemistry projects.
What will you be doing?
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Prof. M. Carmen Galan on the chemical synthesis of biologically relevant oligosaccharides and glycan-based probes for diagnostic applications. This is an BBSRC IAA-funded project and part of a multi-disciplinary research programme.
You should apply if
Experience in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry, bioconjugation, preparation of functional materials and their structural characterization is essential. Experience in microbiology will be ideal to fulfil the demand of the project. Applicants must have a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Experience on using enzymes for synthesis is desirable. You are expected to have an excellent work ethic and commitment to achieve the project aims and be open-minded to collaboration with the other scientists of the project consortium. You will be involved in general running of the laboratory including supervision of undergraduate project students as required, and expected to adhere to our strict safety standards.
