Applications are invited for a Research Associate position to work as part of the flagship Centre for Landscape Regeneration (CLR).
The CLR is an ambitious programme of research that aims to provide the knowledge and tools needed to regenerate the British countryside using cost-effective nature-based solutions. The power of ecosystems will be harnessed to provide broad societal benefits including biodiversity recovery and climate mitigation and adaptation. The post holder will work closely with Prof. Andrew Friend and the wider CLR team. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of CLR, departmental, and University activities, including seminars, teaching, and interactions with a range of research groups.
The successful candidate will make a key contribution to the assessment of how alternative land management practices impact greenhouse-gas fluxes through the development and application of sophisticated modelling tools. The work will involve model development on the Cambridge High Performance Computing facility, where the current code is implemented.
The candidate will, among other activities, extend the model to treat different management interventions, peat growth and decay, and interactions with horizontal water flows. This work will be underpinned by in situ observations of GHG fluxes and hydrological information made by other members of the CLR team across the three CLR landscapes, including our partners at the UK CEH.
Eligible candidates must have a background in simulation modelling and a proven ability to communicate results. They should have obtained, or will soon obtain, a PhD (or have equivalent experience). Candidates with a background in environmental or related sciences are particularly encouraged to apply, but we will also consider those with other numerical backgrounds such as in computer science, mathematics (pure or applied), or engineering. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, have excellent time management, and a proven track record in the delivery of project outputs; experience of effective interdisciplinary team working is desired.
Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £37,694 -£46,049 (Grade 7). Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed as a Research Assistant (Grade 5, Point 38 - £34,610) moving to Research Associate (Grade 7) upon confirmation of PhD award.
