About the role:

The Hanna Group, led by Professor George Hanna, Head of the Department of Surgery and Cancer, focuses on analysing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to identify biomarkers of disease. Current research includes oesophageal, gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers, as well as other benign conditions. 

The laboratory is fully equipped for VOC research, including mass spectrometry breath analysis, bio-fluid VOC analysis, and standard preparation. Facilities include tissue culture and molecular biology labs, VOC-filtered laminar flow cabinets, and positive-pressure rooms. A dedicated Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) ensures full traceability of all samples and data, supporting workflow from sample receipt to analysis. 

What you would be doing: 

  • Develop and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) in line with ISO/IEC 17025, working with the Laboratory Manager and assisting in writing standard operating procedures and other controlled documents.
  • Lead the continual improvement of quality assurance within the laboratory and across clinical trials
  • Train and audit staff to ensure compliance with the QMS, and maintain the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in line with quality standards. 

What we are looking for: 

  • Degree in a relevant scientific subject (or equivalent vocational qualifications) with practical experience in technical or scientific roles, ideally including work in VOC laboratories and quality control for analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry.
  • Experience in development and implementation of Quality Management Systems, ISO/IEC 17025, and other relevant standards (ISO 9001, 15189, 13485), including staff training, auditing, and use of Laboratory Information Management Systems.
  • Strong time-management, meticulous project documentation, and ability to produce concise written material for scientific, regulatory, or administrative purposes; competent in relevant software.
  • Self-starter with initiative, professional approach, and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

This is a full time, fixed term for 6 months with the potential for extension and is available for immediate start.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
