The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research. We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world.
This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of the founding team of the new Medical School and to have a central role in the School’s accreditation process. Our innovative programme aims to produce a new type of doctor - excellent and holistic clinicians who can drive change, delivering integrated and technologically advanced healthcare for their patients and communities. Our School is part of The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, which has a ‘One Health’ ethos that promotes understanding of a ‘whole society’ approach to health and builds on our aims to develop truly interprofessional training.
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual for the key role of Lead for Year 3 & 4 of our Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) Programme. This post is crucial in assisting the Dean, Programme Director, and Lead for Assessment in coordinating the development, delivery, and assessment of Years 3 & 4 of our curriculum.
The role
The successful candidate will act as academic lead for years 3 & 4 of our programme, maintaining and developing high quality teaching and assessment throughout both years. You will work closely with the speciality theme leads to ensure there are appropriate teaching and learning opportunities for students on specialty and final year rotations.
You will support quality assurance processes across both years of the programme and will support the programme director in the development and innovation of year specific teaching modalities and learning resources including technology enhanced learning.
You will lead and support the academic and clinical skills team to ensure the delivery of the final year knowledge, clinical, professional and practical skills and procedures programme, to satisfy the specific requirements for our students to be awarded the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), and a primary medical qualification. You will support our year 4 students in their application to Foundation School Training programmes.
This is a 0.4 FTE (4 PAs) role (2 PAs Year 3 lead and 2 PAs Year 4 lead), and the University is anticipating a joint contractual arrangement with an NHS Trust, or Honorary contract provider such as the Integrated Care Board.
For example, a Trust could remain the substantive employer in line with the relevant NHS pay scale, and the successful candidate would have an Honorary Clinical Academic contract with the University.
About you
To join our new School, you’ll need to be a forward-looking, collaborative and adaptable individual with a ‘can do’ attitude and the ambition to drive innovation in medical education. A senior clinician, you’ll have full registration with the GMC – ideally we are looking for someone with experience working as Consultant Physician in General Medicine. You will also hold a higher professional qualification (usually a doctoral degree or equivalent) and may also hold a teaching qualification.
In addition to these qualifications, you’ll have experience of providing high quality teaching and will have good knowledge of medical education principles and practices (including course accreditation, quality assurance processes, and knowledge of the professional requirements of the GMC). Finally, as an excellent communicator, you’ll have the ability to use tact, diplomacy, and empathy to build effective working relationships at all levels.
