About Us

UCL Mechanical Engineering has been shaping engineering education for over 170 years. We were the first UK institution to appoint a Professor of Mechanical Principles and pioneered practical lab training in university curricula. Today, our students are taught by internationally recognised researchers and engage in innovative individual and group projects.

Our research spans a broad spectrum of engineering challenges, including:

  • Lightweight materials and structures for space and thermal applications
  • Additive manufacturing processes and material properties
  • Sustainable materials for the circular economy
  • Advanced marine manufacturing
  • Micro/nanoscale thermofluidic technologies

We continue to lead in educational innovation. In 2019, we launched MechSpace, a dedicated facility for hands-on engineering education, supporting full-cycle design and build projects. In 2023, we introduced three new MSc programmes at UCL East, focusing on Nanoscale Manufacturing and Advanced Propulsion.

About the Role

This teaching-focused role supports our undergraduate Mechanical Engineering programmes, with future involvement in postgraduate taught programmes. We are seeking candidates with expertise in one of two core streams:

  • Mechanics and Materials
  • Thermo/Fluids

Please indicate your preferred stream in your application.

You will contribute to modules across all levels—from introductory (Years 1–2) to specialist (Years 3–4 and MSc)—and lead teaching sessions, workshops, and lab activities. You’ll also participate in outreach, curriculum development, and the creation of learning materials, while monitoring student progress and engagement.

About You

You are an engaging communicator with a strong technical foundation in mechanical engineering and a passion for education. You bring:

  • A PhD in Engineering
  • Experience in curriculum design and delivery
  • Proven excellence in university-level teaching in materials/mechanics or thermo/fluids
  • Experience supervising undergraduate or postgraduate projects
  • Proficiency in engineering software (e.g., FEA, CFD, Matlab, Python)
  • A strong publication record in engineering and/or educational research
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students
  • Strong time management and clear communication skills
  • A collaborative, proactive approach to working with colleagues and students
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Please refer to the Job Description & Person Specification for full criteria.

Application Guidance

In your supporting statement, please describe how you meet the Person Specification, using specific examples. Indicate clearly whether you wish to be considered for the Materials and Mechanics stream or the Thermo/Fluids stream.
