About the role:

Do you have expertise in higher education research, particularly in education psychology within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplinary contexts? We are seeking a Research Associate to join the final stages of a project to help evaluate a university-wide training programme to enhance student self-regulated learning and lifelong learning skills. This is an exciting post for a researcher with a strong interest in helping students reach their potential through the use effective learning strategies. The training programme has already been developed and is now due to be tested. The contract will be for 6 months starting in February 2026.

What you would be doing:

In this role, you will:

  • maintain good relationships with recruited participants to minimise drop-out from the training programme
  • conduct and analyse data from surveys and focus groups using appropriate quantitative and qualitative research methods and software (e.g. R and NVivo)
  • continue to develop a training programme booklet with resources
  • run workshops to disseminate the training to students
  • run workshops to disseminate the training to staff to embed the training as part of the university’s support for student learning
  • report and present information to the project team, including production of findings reports.
  • maintain highly organised and accurate records of research work
  • collaborate with colleagues from the Departments of Life Sciences and Maths, and the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship (CHERS) who are leading the work
  • collaborate with colleagues from wider University departments, such as Education Development Unit, Education Office, Student Services, Centre for Academic English, ICT to help embed the training
  • contribute with colleagues from different higher education institutions
  • contribute to the promotion and dissemination of the project and its pedagogical outputs within the University
  • comply with university policies relating to health and safety, equality of opportunity and data management.

What we are looking for:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant social sciences field (e.g., education, educational psychology, sociology) or have appropriate equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrate strong qualitative and quantitative research skills
  • Have teaching experience in higher education
  • Be motivated, well-organised, and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent written, verbal and visual communication abilities
  • Have the capacity to manage competing priorities effectively while maintaining high standards.

Further Information

This is a full time, fixed term contract for 6 months starting on 01 February 2026 or shortly after.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant.
