The Department of Education invites applications for a Senior Departmental Lecturer in Mathematics Education. The post-holder will teach and supervise graduate students on the Department’s professional programmes — primarily the PGCE (Mathematics) — and also the MSc in Learning & Teaching (MLT) and MSc in Teacher Education (MTEd).

We seek a candidate whose main research and teaching expertise is in Mathematics Education. All academic staff are expected to be research-active; the appointee should strengthen the Department’s REF profile through publications and external research funding, and be able to supervise DPhil students.

Key responsibilities

  • Teach and lead curriculum on the PGCE, MLT and MTEd programmes.
  • Undertake high-quality research and secure external funding.
  • Supervise postgraduate research, contribute to academic administration, and work with school partners.

Essential qualifications & experience

  • PhD/DPhil in a relevant field and a good first degree in the curriculum subject.
  • UK teaching qualification or equivalent.
  • Significant experience teaching secondary mathematics (including A level/Further Maths desirable).
  • Experience in initial/continuing teacher education, strong pedagogic awareness.
  • A track record of publications and experience with research methods (qualitative and/or quantitative).
  • Evidence of ability to write proposals and lead funded projects; strong interpersonal skills.

  • The MLT and MTEd are two-year, part-time Master’s programmes (MTEd delivered by distance learning) with strong emphasis on research-informed pedagogy.
