Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Relativistic Simulations of jets from stellar mass black holes at the University of Oxford, Physics Department.

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work on relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of jets from stellar mass black holes in X-ray binary systems. The aims of this work are to build upon recent simulations from our group (e.g. Savard, Matthews et al. 2025 and Gasealahwe, Savard et al. 2025) in order to better understand a wide range of astrophysical aspects.

You will join a large team working on observations and interpretation of such jets, and will become part of the international ‘X-KAT’ team using new data from the MeerKAT radio telescope to study these jets. They will furthermore become a core member of the ‘Blackholistic’ team (Oxford-Amsterdam-Radboud) which includes relativistic simulations on all scales from black hole to large scale jets, as well as analysis of data from the Event Horizon Telescope. You will also have the opportunity to teach.
You should hold a PhD (or close to completion) in a relevant area of astrophysics or physics.

Experience in performing numerical simulations in astrophysics is essential as well as the evidence of a capacity to work independently and have sufficient specialist knowledge and technical skills to work within established research programmes are required.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Prof. Rob Fender  (Rob.Fender@physics.ox.ac.uk).

This is a full-time post, fixed term for 12 months.

The closing date for applications is noon UK time on Friday, 24 October 2025.

The supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.

You should arrange for your 2 referees to send your reference to leanne.odonnell@physics.ox.ac.uk before the closing date.
