A unique opportunity for an individual to join as a Laboratory Technician in the Veterinary Medicine School at the University of Surrey, responsible for the daily support, maintenance, and operation of the Research Laboratories within the School of Veterinary Medicine, ensuring a safe, efficient, and well-supported research environment (this is a full-time permanent role).

You’ll support laboratory operations, providing skilled technical support is available to assist lab users with best practices while maintaining compliance with Health & Safety regulations.

Role & Responsibilities

You’ll be working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, managing laboratory consumables and equipment, ensuring availability and safe functionality. You will directly support research activities by providing inductions for new research staff, training on specific equipment, and hands-on assistance as required, working collaboratively with your line manager to maintain high standards of research support.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Providing support for the day to day running of Vet School research laboratories, ensuring smooth operation of the laboratories, manage service contracts, liaise with suppliers, contractors and EFCS to ensure maintenance of laboratories.
  • Working with your line manager to coordinate and allocate technical support staff for research areas, to ensure: the laboratories are serviced and have adequate supplies of all resources including consumables and equipment and all areas are safe to work in.
  • Liaise with academic/ research staff to design and make recommendations for new lab-based equipment and to work up pilot experiments and assist with research activities
  • Develop and oversee procedures, SOP’s and RAs for the technical support activities within the vet school laboratories and assist research and academic staff to produce working documents for research activities and teaching projects.
