Lecturer in Filmmaking

Kingston University - School of Arts

Location: Kingston upon Thames, London
Salary: £45,025 to £48,820
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 17th October 2025
Closes: 6th November 2025
Job Ref: 597803

The Role
The BA Filmmaking and MA film making courses at Kingston School of Art encourage students to explore all forms of moving image practice, across fiction, non-fiction, experimental and hybrid modes of production, in both analogue and digital formats. Both programmes are taught through a series of project-led practice modules embracing research and experimentation.

This role provides a career-defining opportunity to work across both courses in the areas of cinematography and short fiction production. You will work alongside our dynamic and dedicated educators, practitioners, and researchers to promote and foster an innovative, inclusive, and supportive pedagogic environment that equips our students with the academic, social and personal skills to prosper in global and diverse environments.

You’ll join a close-knit group of academics behind a varied programme of research-led teaching, workshops, seminars and will plan, deliver, and assess a range of modules, using a variety of technologies and approaches. You will work with the Course Leaders and teams across our undergraduate and postgraduate filmmaking courses to ensure that the curriculum and student learning experience keep pace with contemporary professional and research developments within filmmaking. The role also provides the opportunity to work with a diverse and international group of students, so you should be committed to developing innovative teaching and learning strategies that support our students and our strategic priority to decolonise and internationalise the curriculum.

Alongside teaching, you will conduct innovative research and scholarship within our Research, Knowledge Exchange or HE Pedagogy domains, developing sector-leading collaborative projects and producing practice-led outputs for publication. Working side-by-side with talented colleagues, you’ll share knowledge and expertise through professional consultancy, pursuing opportunities that will generate income and support students with valuable placements, wherever possible.

The Person
We’re looking for an innovative academic professional with a commitment and passion for filmmaking teaching and learning. Advanced knowledge and experience of cinematography is essential, preferably with some experience of writing or directing fiction. You will draw on your professional experience as a filmmaker to promote integrated professional practice across everything you do, imparting practical filmmaking knowledge to students that they will take with them in their future careers.

The successful candidate will have a filmmaking degree, or equivalent professional experience, with an established or emerging research profile; and experience offering quality teaching, assessment, feedback and tutoring to a diverse range of students at HE Level. You will be an excellent communicator and collaborator, who works effectively within diverse teams with colleagues. We actively encourage applications from underrepresented communities and female applicants.

By the end of probation, you must achieve the relevant UKPSF recognition if not already obtained—either through our accredited Introduction to Learning and Teaching programme for new lecturers or the Kingston Academic Practice Standards framework for experienced educators.

Further Information
This is a part-time (29.60 hours per week), permanent position with a starting salary of £36,020 per annum (80% pro rata of £45,025 per annum).

Interviews are expected to be held on Friday 14 November 2025.

For informal enquiries, please contact Shane O’Sullivan, Head of Department of Film & Photography.

Bring your true self, expertise, and passion to Kingston where we are continuing to strive to build a university where authentic inclusion and belonging is at its heart.
