Research Assistant, UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, Fixed-term post until 31 Dec. 2026
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Assistant within UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science.
Following the success of a project which determined the level of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in wastewater treatment plants in the greater Dublin area, the team in University College Dublin, together with Uisce Éireann (formerly Irish Water), the National Virus Reference Laboratory and the HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre established the National Wastewater Surveillance Programme (NWSP). The programme involves the weekly collection and analysis of wastewater samples from wastewater treatment plants located across the Republic of Ireland. Results of the analysis are shared with the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and are communicated to a number of organisations including the HSE Public Health Departments as well as being made available to the public via the HPSC’s website. In addition to detecting the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, the team in UCD has developed its surveillance toolkit to include variants of SARS-CoV-2 as well as other pathogens.
We have a vacancy for a Research Assistant to participate in the National Wastewater Surveillance Programme. The Research Assistant will be involved in all aspects of this project including wastewater analysis, quality control of procedures used to concentrate, extract and quantify viral genetic material and development of methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 variants. )
