The School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield is one of the most vibrant and successful centres for research and teaching in the field of Politics in the UK. The School is now seeking to appoint a full-time Research Associate to work alongside Professor Felicity Matthews on research that advances our understanding of the contemporary House of Commons; and aligned topics including changing patterns of political participation and the influence of ‘celebrity politics’ on political debate and policymaking.

We would like to hear from you if you are working in the fields of British politics, parliamentary studies and political participation. We are especially interested in those with a strong background in parliamentary studies; and an excellent understanding of the history and development of the UK Parliament. We are also keen to hear from applicants with experience of undertaking research with political elites; and with experience of engaging with, and disseminating knowledge to, a range of non-academic audiences.

You will hold or be close to completing (i.e. thesis submitted) a PhD in Politics in a relevant sub-field, e.g. British Politics, parliamentary studies, political participation (or have equivalent experience). Evidence of research excellence, as demonstrated by a track-record of publications in high-quality relevant journals, is essential. You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, report writing skills, and experience of delivering presentations. You will be able to work independently, plan your own workload and prioritise conflicting deadlines. The successful candidate will have access to researcher development support, as well as time for their own research.

Enquiries about the position should be directed to Professor Felicity Matthews (f.m.matthews@sheffield.ac.uk).
