The University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Engineering seeks an experienced Research Associate in Electrical Engineering, control systems, or a related subject area to contribute to a significant research endeavour promoting low-carbon household heating solutions. This project, backed by the South Yorkshire Sustainability Centre and the Grantham Institute, strives to analyse the performance of current and emerging heating technologies in real-world residential environments.

Your role will involve applied experimental work, evaluating system-level performance, interoperability, and user impacts. You will help assess how these technologies interact in practice and identify both the opportunities and barriers they present. This work is key to enabling informed decisions by homeowners, local authorities, and policymakers—supporting a just and effective energy transition without the need for extensive grid upgrades.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • A doctoral degree (or equivalent experience) in electrical/control engineering or a similar field.
  • Experience in experimental energy systems research.
  • Experience with predictive control, low-carbon technologies, or advanced energy systems (preferred).
  • Proven ability to successfully implement and evaluate complex systems.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and a flawless approach to research.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work within our world-class team.
  • Ambition to drive impactful research that competes on the global stage.

Join us to contribute to practical, scalable solutions that reduce emissions, lower energy bills, and improve housing sustainability across the UK!

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
