Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor (or Professor) in the field of Quantum Condensed Matter Theory in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, University of Oxford. The successful candidate will also be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship in Physics at Somerville College under arrangements described in the Job Description and Person Specification. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
We invite applications from candidates working in the broad field of quantum condensed matter theory, but have a particular interest in those with significant experience in the intersection of quantum condensed matter theory and quantum information. Ideally, the post holder will also exploit synergies with research in the Condensed Matter and Atomic and Laser Physics sub-departments, the Mathematical Institute, and/or the newly formed Oxford Quantum Institute. On behalf of the College, they will have responsibility for admission, teaching, and support of students reading degrees in Physics. They will play a role in the running of the College as a trustee and a member of its Governing Body.
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in theoretical physics or a related field, and will have a proven record of research in quantum condensed matter theory. They will be an excellent teacher of undergraduates and graduates and have the interpersonal skills necessary to engage with students and colleagues at all levels.
Applications are particularly welcome from women, black and ethnic minority candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.
As part of your application, you will be asked to upload a CV (4 pages), a full list of publications (no page limit), a brief cover letter (1 page) and a research proposal (3 pages including figures). The research proposal should set out your plans and priorities for research over the next five years. It can also summarise the past, current and future direction of your research, highlighting how your research has evolved and your key achievements. Your three referees should be asked to send their letters, before the application deadline, to wykehamea@physics.ox.ac.uk.
Only applications received before 12 noon GMT on Friday, 5 December 2025 can be guaranteed full consideration.
Candidates must be available to travel to Oxford for interviews.
