Research Technician - In vitro Cell Models

Are you a science graduate with hands-on experience in human cell culture and a passion for supporting impactful research? We have an exciting opportunity at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) for someone looking to build a career in neurodegeneration research and drug discovery.

You’ll join a collaborative team working on a cutting-edge project exploring the potential of Janus Kinase inhibitors (Jakinibs) as treatments for Motor Neurone Disease (MND/ALS). This role focuses on in vitro models, supporting experiments using astrocyte-neuron co-cultures and iPSC-derived motor neurons to uncover mechanisms of neuroprotection.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Supporting human cell culture experiments and maintaining accurate records.
• Assisting with immunohistochemistry and cell-based assays.
• Preparing and updating COSHH forms, risk assessments, and SOPs.
• Participating in weekly team meetings and contributing to planning and delivery of lab work.
• Working closely with postdoctoral researchers and other technicians in a well-connected, translational research environment.

Who We’re Looking For

You’ll have a good honours degree in Biological or Biomedical Sciences, ideally with a focus on neuroscience, or equivalent experience. You’ll bring:

• Experience in human primary cell culture and immunohistochemistry.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills.
• A reliable and detail-oriented approach to lab procedures.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.

You’ll be confident in managing your own workload, creating daily/weekly task lists, and aligning your work with the goals of the wider research team.
