Introduction to YSJ University

Situated in the heart of the historic city of York, and with the addition of our London Campus, York St John University has a long and proud tradition as a distinguished higher education provider.

Our success is founded on the quality of academic teaching and research, our thriving campus environments, our professional and pastoral support, and our values of an inclusive, innovative and ambitious community with a strong sense of belonging.

The Team

You will be joining Innovation and Technology Services (ITS) department, working within the Infrastructure Deployment team. This team plays a critical role in delivering our Windows 11 and mobile computing/AV upgrade programme.

As part of this dedicated team, you will work alongside experienced infrastructure professionals who focus on building, supporting and maintaining the university's digital infrastructure.

The Role

We are looking to recruit two Windows 11 Deployment Engineers to support two major technology programmes:

A University-wide hardware refresh and Windows 11 rollout, which includes the transition the University to mobile computing.

The IT desktop infrastructure fit-out of our newly acquired King’s Manor site

In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for upgrading/replacing over 1,000 campus computers and associated peripherals from Windows 10 to Windows 11, as well as supporting the rollout of progressive rollout or mobile computing devices. Your duties will include preparing and configuring devices, delivering them in person, and providing a personalised 1:1 handover and onboarding experience to ensure a smooth transition for staff.

You will also manage the removal and secure disposal of old equipment, maintain accurate asset records, and ensure effective stock control. This is a campus-based role in York, with occasional travel to our London campus. Physical handling of equipment is required, and adherence to deployment schedules is critical to success. This role is fixed term for 18 months.

Required Skills and Experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, configure and deploy Windows 11 devices across the University.
  • Deliver devices in person and provide tailored onboarding support to users.
  • Manage secure disposal of old equipment and maintain accurate asset records.
  • Provide support to users during transition, working with incidents/tickets providing resolution and escalation.
  • Ensure compliance with audit, security and ITIL processes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across ITS and the wider University community.
  • Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and contribute to digital strategy development.
  • Auditing and documentation of device network patching and port usage in areas where deployments are taking place.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Education to degree level or significant relevant experience in ICT.
  • Strong understanding and experience in Windows desktop deployment in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft System Center technologies and scripting (e.g., PowerShell).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organised, proactive and customer-focused approach.

Successful candidates will possess a strong sense of independence and motivation, paired with a solid foundation in cyber security principles. Adaptability is essential, as the role involves both collaborative teamwork and the ability to handle incidents autonomously.

While not essential, technical qualifications such as CCNA or MCSE would be advantageous. A foundation-level certification in ITIL or PRINCE2 is also desirable. Experience with mobile technologies, Apple devices, and AV systems would further strengthen your application.
