About Student Welfare and Support Services

Student Welfare and Support Services (SWSS) works with colleges, departments, the Student Union, and external partners on student health and welfare. Our services—including Counselling, Disability Advisory, Sexual Harassment and Violence Support, Peer Support, and Mental Health Awareness Training—promote wellbeing and help students thrive.

We are now offering an opportunity to contribute to the development of a new Mental Health Advisory Service. This service will:

  • Provide support for students with serious, complex, and enduring mental health difficulties
  • Offer clinical consultancy, incident response, and case coordination for academic and professional welfare staff
  • Build proactive liaison and care pathways with NHS services

This is a rare chance to help shape a new provision, adapting the University Mental Health Advisor model to Oxford’s collegiate environment.

Working at the University of Oxford provides valuable benefits, including:

  • 38 days’ leave, with options to buy extra and long-service leave
  • Up to 26 weeks’ full-pay maternity/adoption leave
  • Hybrid and flexible working
  • A strong contributory pension
  • Affordable, sustainable travel options

About the Role

The Mental Health Advisor will play a key role in the new Mental Health Advisory Service—a three-year pilot establishing specialist support for undergraduate and postgraduate students with serious, complex, or long-term mental health difficulties.

Working within a culturally sensitive, neuro-inclusive, social-recovery model, you will provide assessment, intervention, and care and safety planning to help students engage with their studies and wider university life.

You will also offer specialist advice to academic and professional staff and act as a key link between the University, colleges, and NHS services to ensure coordinated support and effective care pathways.

Finally, you will contribute to the development and review of this new service, supporting continuous improvement and best practice in student mental health provision.

Candidates should have:

  • A professional qualification and current registration in a relevant mental health field (e.g., RMN, Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker)
  • Experience supporting adults with serious or long-term mental health conditions (e.g., eating disorders, major depression, schizophrenia, EUPD, OCD, severe self-harm, suicidality, emotional dysregulation)
  • Proven ability in risk assessment, crisis intervention, and safety planning
  • Experience working with multi-professional teams and external agencies, including the NHS
  • Experience providing consultation on complex or high-risk cases
  • Up-to-date Level 3 safeguarding training and experience
  • Commitment to culturally sensitive, inclusive, neuro-affirming practice
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational and IT skills, balancing a varied caseload with service-development work

To apply, please upload:

  • A covering letter/supporting statement
  • Your CV
