About the role:

Applications are invited for a Borland Fellowship in the Department of Mathematics, commencing on 1 October 2026.  The duration of this post is for two years (fixed term).

This post provides an excellent opportunity for those seeking to pursue an academic career in condensed matter physics, metamaterials and wave physics.  Candidates for a Borland Fellowship are expected to have proven research ability in one of these areas and alignment with research activities in metamaterials and wave physics.

The post holder will be affiliated with the Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (AMMP) Section of the Mathematics Department, and interact with collaborative activities with the Department of Physics in Metamaterials i.e. through the Center for Plasmnics and Metamaterials.   Applicants are encouraged to indicate members of the AMMP Section, or that Center with whom they anticipate interacting during the fellowship.

What you would be doing:

Borland Fellows will produce independent and original research within the Departments of Mathematics and Physics, submit publications to refereed journals. The post holders will be expected to undertake a self-directed program of research and scholarship, play a role in the national and international Mathematics and Physics communities

What we are looking for:

  • A good honours degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics or Physics
  • PhD (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a closely related subject
  • Expertise in Metamaterials or Wave Physics
  • A proven research record in Mathematics and/or Physics
  • The potential for strong leadership qualities in the subject, as illustrated, for example, through showing initiative on research projects.
  • An outstanding research record commensurate with their level of experience as demonstrated, for example, through an outstanding thesis, publications, conference presentations etc.
  • An exceptional ability in the chosen research area.
  • The ability to contribute significantly to the research environment of the Departments of Mathematics and Physics as demonstrated, for example, through a proven track record of successful research interaction.
