The University of Greenwich is a world-class institution with a diverse student and staff community with an ambitious forward-thinking vision. With campuses in Greenwich, Avery Hill, and Medway, we are proud to deliver an inclusive and transformative student experience while fostering academic excellence, inclusivity, collaboration and impact.

The Role:

Working as part of Vice Chancellors Office, you will advise Academic teams on health and safety matters related to biological, chemical and scientific activities; helping the Faculty Operating Officers to discharge their management duties and ensuring a safe working environment which maintains the health and wellbeing of staff, students, contractors and visitors.

The successful candidate will be part of a small but high performing team, providing competent advice relating to biological and scientific activities, reviewing related risk assessments / codes of practice, conducting investigations into significant incidents involving biological, and / or chemical agents, developing and assisting with the delivery of laboratory specific health and safety training and working with other members of the Health and Safety Services team to ensure the facilities used for scientific activities are appropriate and subject to suitable maintenance / registration.

The University is an exciting, constantly developing workplace, and the ability to provide pragmatic support in such an environment is essential. This is a highly collaborative and visible role, providing an excellent opportunity for a motivated self-starter to help the University meet and surpass its statutory obligations and encourage a positive health and safety culture. As the majority of our scientific activities take place within the Faculty of Engineering and Science, regular travel to our Medway campus will be required.

To be successful, you will have previous experience of working, and providing health and safety advice, in a laboratory based scientific or research and development role, analysing and identifying practical solutions to a variety of scientific problems in order to drive positive changes in scientific practice. You will hold a relevant recognised Health and Safety qualification, to the minimum standard of NEBOSH Diploma / NVQ Level 5, or equivalent, and be able to provide a proactive and collaborative approach to all Health and Safety matters. .
