About us
The mission of the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. About the role
The post holder will be part of the Breuer research group and join an international and highly collaborative environment. The Breuer team works on better understanding viral infections with lab and computational models. The group has unique expertise in using genomics methods to characterise infections and understand pathogenesis (i.e. from respiratory and herpes viruses). The team primarily works on metagenomics methods (lab and computation), viral evolution and genetics and host transcriptomics in response to infections. This is a 12-month post at Grade 7. We seek a computational researcher with experience in analysing metagenomics data, pathogen genomics and/or RNAseq data. To lead and support metagenomics and viral genomics analysis with Illumina and Nanopore data, developing and refining analytical pipelines. To support metagenomics and viral genomics analysis of clinical data, ensuring rigorous and reproducible workflows. To identify and analyse data publicly available (i.e. in ENA)
About you
The successful candidate will have PhD (or near completion) in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or related quantitative discipline, experience in data analysis with R and/or Python, experience in BASH and command line and working in High Computational Computing environment. Experience in bioinformatics pipelines; at least one of: metagenomics pipelines (such as Kraken and others), pathogen genomics pipelines (such as consensus generating, phylogenetic reconstruction), RNAseq analysis (such as differential gene expression analysis).
