Applications are invited to an appointment to the post of College Lecturer in English at King’s College, part of the University of Cambridge. The position is for six months in the first instance, to cover a period of absence, renewable (subject to satisfactory performance and teaching need). The post is to commence as early in the Lent term as is feasible for the candidate, and the role will focus on the delivery of supervision teaching to the Colleges’ undergraduate students studying the English Tripos. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Bye Fellowship within the College for the duration of their post and will enjoy the benefits that Associate membership of the Fellowship provides.

The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team of Official Fellows in English, which currently includes Prof David Hillman, Dr Phillip Knox, Dr Ryan Heuser (Digital Humanities), and Dr Dale Kedwards (Anglo Saxon Norse and Celtic), and Life Fellows Prof Nicky Zeeman, and Prof Pete de Bolla.

Responsibilities. The role will involve delivering small group teaching across a variety of topics in the second and third year of the English undergraduate degree, in particular the delivery of teaching covering the following undergraduate papers: Part IB, Paper 6 English Literature and its Contexts 1660-1870; Part II, Paper 9: Love, Gender, Sexuality 1740-1824; Practical Criticism and Critical Practice. Additionally, the successful candidate may be asked to assist with Direction of Studies, which involves coordinating teaching of other papers and ensuring students are making good progress; interviewing prospective undergraduate students and assisting with admissions; and other tasks which may be necessary for organising and delivering English teaching at the college. The successful applicant will also have the freedom to pursue their own research interests around their teaching responsibilities.

Person Specification. The successful applicant will be required to hold a PhD in English Literature (or be close to achieving this), preferably in an area cognate with the Colleges’ Teaching needs, and be well versed in the delivery of small group teaching in a supervision-style context. Desirable criteria include experience with delivering small group teaching, and familiarity with undergraduate interviewing. The successful applicant would be expected to reside in or near Cambridge during term time and take an active part in the wider academic life of the College. Benefits. The starting salary is £38,636 per annum, based on the King’s College scale for College Teaching Officers. A college office will also be provided for teaching and academic study, single residential accommodation at subsidised rates may be available.
