The Department of Archaeology seeks to appoint a part-time, permanent Biomolecular Research Laboratory Technician. The post holder will be based in the Department's laboratories, which are spread over several buildings on the Downing and Old Addenbrooke's sites: the holder of this role will work primarily in the Henry Wellcome Building (HWB) on Fitzwilliam Street. The laboratories have facilities for the extraction and analysis of DNA, proteins and hormones.
The duties of the role holder include preparing and analyzing samples in support of research activity in the biomolecular laboratories; setting up equipment and experiments for teaching or research; supporting laboratory administration; ensuring that students and other laboratory users observe health and safety procedures; assisting with maintenance of laboratory tidiness and organization; disposing of chemical and biological waste; purchasing laboratory supplies.
The post holder will provide technical support for the Director of the Biomolecular Laboratory, for visiting and in-house researchers working with material in the Biomolecular Laboratory, as well as supporting the Chief Technician/Facilities Manager in maintenance of the labs and equipment. They will be expected to attend and contribute to weekly Lab and Research group meetings as well as less frequent technician support meetings.
Candidates will have a good standard of general education (A level, NVQ level 3, or an equivalent level of practical experience). Candidates will have good experience of laboratory technician/biological scientific research work and knowledge of the facts, principles, processes and general concepts related to Laboratory Technician work. Basic skills in molecular genetics and biology, and a high degree of precision and accuracy, will also be required; good communications skills will be essential, along with good IT skills.
