Background
The Intellectual Property & Commercialisation team within Research & Innovation Services drives commercial impact from City St George's research. This part-time role (0.5 FTE) provides business partnering services, identifying, protecting, and commercialising novel ideas and inventions. Reporting to the Head of IP & Commercialisation, you'll manage aspects of the University's IP portfolio, negotiate commercial agreements, and ensure effective risk management in IP commercialisation activities.
Responsibilities
Key duties include managing relationships with patent agents, negotiating licensing agreements and spin-out contracts with industry partners, and coordinating with internal teams including Research & Innovation Contracts and General Counsel. You'll seek external funding for IP development, advise on IP provisions in research contracts, proactively support spin-out companies, and raise awareness of IP matters through academic engagement.
Person Specification
We seek a candidate with a postgraduate degree and professional training in business or legal issues (M.Sc. in Intellectual Property Law or equivalent preferred). Significant experience in technology transfer or business development, preferably in a university or technology-based company, is essential. You'll demonstrate excellent communication, leadership, negotiation and commercial awareness skills, with the ability to operate effectively at the academic-commercial interface and manage complex, varied projects independently while working collaboratively within a team.
